Puppy Essentials
Everything a New Puppy Actually Needs

Five categories cover 90% of what a new puppy needs in their first month โ€” without the marketing fluff.

๐Ÿถ The Five-Category Rule

Most "new puppy" lists run 40+ items and overwhelm new owners. The truth: a properly sized crate, an age-appropriate food, soft chew toys, a comfortable bed, and basic training tools cover almost everything. Buy the basics first; add the rest as you discover what your specific puppy needs.

๐Ÿพ The Puppy Essentials Bundle

Every link below goes straight to the matching category on Chewy. Choose the size and brand that fits your puppy's breed and weight.

1. Puppy Food

Puppies need 2ร— the calories per pound of an adult dog. Stick with a puppy-specific formula until 12 months (or 18 months for giant breeds). Match the formula to your puppy's eventual adult size โ€” small-breed puppy food has smaller kibble pieces.

2. Crate & Kennel

A properly sized crate is the single highest-ROI puppy purchase. It accelerates house training, prevents destructive chewing, and gives your puppy a safe space when they're overstimulated. The crate should be just large enough for them to stand, turn around, and lie down โ€” not so large they can use one corner as a bathroom.

3. Training & Behavior Tools

A clicker, a treat pouch, low-calorie training treats, and a few puppy training pads cover the basics. The most important "tool" is consistency โ€” but the right gear makes consistency easier.

4. Toys (Especially Puzzle Feeders)

Puppies need to chew โ€” give them appropriate outlets or they'll find their own. Soft rubber toys, frozen Kongs, and puzzle feeders extend calm engagement by 30โ€“60 minutes. A bored puppy is a destructive puppy.

5. A Comfortable Bed

Most puppies will destroy their first bed within a few months. Buy a chew-resistant or washable starter bed first โ€” invest in an orthopedic bed once they're past the teething stage. Crate-sized beds work as a starter.
