Is Pet Insurance Worth It? A Pet Sitter’s Honest Take

By Missy ZippererMarch 30, 20258 min read

When pet insurance pays off, when it doesn’t, and how it compares to a self-funded emergency fund.

I get asked this every month. My honest answer: insurance is worth it if you’d struggle to cover a $5,000 ER bill in 48 hours. If you can, a self-funded emergency fund is usually a better deal.

What insurance covers well

  • Accidents (torn ACL, foreign body ingestion)
  • Sudden illness (pancreatitis, cancer)
  • Chronic conditions if enrolled early

What it doesn’t cover

  • Pre-existing conditions
  • Preventive care (usually add-on)
  • Behavioral training

Recommendation

Preventive care reduces claims

PetMeds

Benefits

  • Flea, tick, heartworm plans
  • Dental support
  • Talk to a licensed pharmacist
