By Missy Zipperer • February 18, 2025 • 6 min read
From a working pet sitter’s notebook — the exact adjustments I make for senior dog clients.
Most dogs enter their senior years around 7 (or 5 for large breeds). The changes are gradual but they add up.
What changes
- Lower calorie needs (~15% less)
- Slower digestion
- Joint stiffness
- Sleep pattern shifts
- More frequent bathroom breaks
What I do differently
- Two smaller meals instead of one big one
- Orthopedic bedding
- Softened kibble with warm water
- Extra potty breaks
- Track weight monthly
Recommendation
Senior joint & calm support
Best for: Dogs 7+ or large breeds 5+.
Benefits
- Joint & mobility
- Calming products
- Vet-formulated wellness
