Senior Dog Care Checklist: What Changes at 7+

By Missy ZippererFebruary 18, 20256 min read

From a working pet sitter’s notebook — the exact adjustments I make for senior dog clients.

Most dogs enter their senior years around 7 (or 5 for large breeds). The changes are gradual but they add up.

What changes

  • Lower calorie needs (~15% less)
  • Slower digestion
  • Joint stiffness
  • Sleep pattern shifts
  • More frequent bathroom breaks

What I do differently

  • Two smaller meals instead of one big one
  • Orthopedic bedding
  • Softened kibble with warm water
  • Extra potty breaks
  • Track weight monthly
